By 1990, Jordan Brand was an absolute powerhouse. MJ had reached a height of recognition & fame that had only been seen by the likes of very few people in history. Godfather of Sole, Tinker Hatfield, was left with the monumental task of following up the Air Jordan 3, & Air Jordan 4.

The Air Jordan 5 continued to break the mould. With its $125USD price tag, never-seen-before materials, lace locks, & fighter plane inspired shape. Four colour ways released in 1990, with only the Fire Red & Black/Metallic Silver editions receiving reflective tongues, a feature now synonymous with the AJ5. It was the first sneaker in the Jordan line that featured a clear rubber sole, an idea that Hatfield (Godfather of Sole) had experimented with for Back To The Future II’s Nike Mag. The Nike Mag was designed with clear moulding, in order to let the infamous lights on the sneaker glow through.

The AJ5 earned it’s place in history partly due to MJ’s career-high scoring against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs & Bulls had already begun to develop an intense rivalry, but on March 28th 1990, Jordan became a basketball villain in Cleveland. At the Cav’s home arena, MJ achieved his best single game stats: 69 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists & 4 steals - giving the Bulls a solid opportunity for a playoff run, all while wearing the Air Jordan 5.
